District 1 News

March 2009

Greetings from the Louisville District.
I hope everyone made it through the ice and wind storms without too much damage. Hang on, just a few more weeks until we will be able to enjoy some much needed riding weather. Remember as we return to the streets, Mr. Car Driver hasn’t seen us in a while and is not used to us being there. Let’s make sure we are doing all we can to be seen!
Hopefully, we will be able to make it through the legislative session without negative legislation being passed against us. Don’t let your guard down yet! Continue to carry the Legislative Message Line number (1-800-372-3181) with you at all times. You never know when you may be called upon to make a call to your legislator. Carry a few friends’ numbers with you as well, have them to call also.
We are looking forward to our annual Easter Basket Run. It will take place on
April 11, 2009. We will be meeting at Kroger in the Germantown Square Shopping Center. It is located at 1265 Goss Ave. which is just north of Eastern Parkway. We will be meeting there around noon. Hopefully, we will have a flyer ready before this is sent. Unlike Toys for Tots, we actually deliver the baskets to the children. It really shows you that there is a need and these children are always happy to see the Easter Bunny.
Our meetings are the
2nd Sunday of the month at the
American Legion Iroquois Post
800 W Woodlawn Ave @ 5:30 pm

The next meeting will be on March 8th. I hope to see you there!

New Years Greetings from the Louisville District
I hope every one had a wonderful Christmas and is now ready to stand against attacks to our freedom of choice and any other outlandish bills that may appear during the 2009 Legislative Session. We should not go into this session feeling confident because we managed to kill unfriendly legislation during the 2008 session. We may be surprised where the ideas are coming from. The people who stand against us are not just in Frankfort. Check out this email I received from a high school girl here in Louisville:

My name is ________ and I am currently a Senior at Pleasure
Ridge Park High School. I am a member of the Mayor's Youth Cabinet.

I am trying to write a full bill to present in Frankfort that
mandates the wear of helmets for motorcyclists. I am curious
if I would have your support in lobbying for this bill.

As a little background on myself and this bill, this past weekend,
I attended the Kentucky Youth Assembly, a mock-legislation which
allows us to debate bills. Now, even if the bills are passed
during KYA, they are not in anyway handled by the officials of
Kentucky. This is where you come in. I would be so honored
and
appreciative if you could help me get my bill off the ground
and into the hands of other government officials. My goal is
to help keep Kentucky and its citizens safe and I believe that
my bill can do tha
t. I know it will be a hard battle, it was
a hard battle getting the Seat-belt Law passed, but I do know
that I have the drive and ambition to get my bill lobbied and
hopefully, passed.

I have enclosed a copy of the bill that I presented KYA. It was
passed twice through our combined committees, so I am confident
that it can be passed legally through our Legislative Branch
in Kentucky.
Of course, if this were to be passed legally in the state of
Kentucky, there would be MUCH more detail and it would be longer.
I am aware of the under 21/permit law requiring those 21 and
under or those with a permit to wear a helmet, as well as the
plate-sticker available for non-helmet usage, but my bill simply
addresses the broad state of drivers.

I would appreciate it if you could mentor me and help me with
this matter.

Thank you VERY much!

Pretty Frightening Huh! I am in the process of trying to schedule a Share the Road Presentation in her school. This is reason enough to make sure that we educate these kids about us and our way of life. You can be sure they are getting educated from our unfriendly counterparts.
Once again, Fred did an outstanding job with the Toys for Tots Run. The weather and the City of Louisville didn’t cooperate very well but the people did. As you may know the City of Louisville, at the last minute, wanted to charge us $1,900.00 for helping with the Toys for Tots Run. This sent Fred scrambling to find others who would help. We would like to offer many thanks to the following for stepping up and making Toys for Tots Run a success:
Lt. Mike Marcy and Sgt. Joe L. Castellano, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Dept.
Sgt. Keith Ferriell, Audobon Police Dept.
Chief Kelly Spratt, Indian Hills Police Dept.
Chief Wayne Hall, University of Louisville Police Dept.
Col. Norm Mayer and Brad Jeffrey, St. Matthews Police Dept.
Major Kevin Higdon and Major Martin Kleier, Shively Police Dept.
Don Wittry, Fairdale Fire Dept.
Rick Sanders, Jeffersontown Fire Dept.
Lt. Col. Joe Bowman, Pleasure Ridge Fire Dept.
We also want to send special thanks to the Christian Motorcycle Association and the Night Hawgs who are always there when we need them.
It was our 2nd year without Rocky as our Santa Claus, we will always miss him but John Locke is doing a fine job and Rocky would be proud.
Don’t forget our New Year’s Tradition Polar Bear Run on January 1 leaving Fern & Moody’s 3903 Bardstown Rd at 1:00. We also have the Easyriders Bike Show on January 31st at the Ky International Convention Center 221 Fourth Street in Louisville.
I hope to see you all at the Freedom Fighters Forum. Remember our meetings are the 2nd Sunday of the month at 5:30. We meet at The American Legion, 800 Woodlawn. Come see us! I wish everyone a Happy, Prosperous and Healthy New Year!
